The American Red Cross

Disaster Services
The Red Cross responds 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to disasters such as fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, or any other situation that creates human need. Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers work with the people who are affected by disasters to help them return to normal living conditions. Services provided include:

  • Setting up disaster shelters

  • Feeding affected people

  • Health and mental health assistance

  • Contacting family in the disaster area

  • Providing individual and family assistance

  • Conducting damage assessments

  • Meeting other immediate needs of disaster victims

Services are provided person-to-person. All assistance is free; clients are never asked to repay any Red Cross disaster assistance. Volunteers with the Disaster Service Human Resource System (DSHR) support the efforts of the Red Cross in disaster-affected areas nationwide by organizing volunteers on the scene.

International Social Services
When war, upheaval, or natural disaster disrupts normal communication, the Red Cross springs into action, bringing hope and help to those whose world has spun out of control. International Social Services volunteers help locate missing loved ones, reunite families, bridge the communication gap and make health and welfare inquiries in times of emergency.

The American Red Cross
